SAINT PAUL, MN – August 20, 2015 – For many families, the high cost of school supplies push them out of reach. This summer, the Employee Engagement Committee at Green Tree Servicing in St. Paul was looking for a way to help local grade school students get the tools and supplies they need.

“The Fill-A-Backpack Drive was an easy decision for our Committee,” said Committee spokesperson Barb Nickelsen, Administrative Assistant for Green Tree’s Infrastructure Department. “Everyone wanted to help. We worked with Program Director Laura Brown at the Amherst H. Wilder Foundation, a local nonprofit community organization, and 14 other participating local companies. Wilder provided us with a school supplies wish list and a deadline and our employees did the rest.”

Ninety-five backpacks and enough supplies to fill them
Green Tree employees in St. Paul collected more than 2,000 items for elementary school students to start the 2015-2016 school year. Items donated included 95 backpacks, 167 boxes of crayons, 332 notebooks, 298 folders, 129 packages of scissors, as well as calculators, markers, rulers, glue, and other necessary learning tools.

“Our employees really came through for this Fill-A-Backpack Drive,” said Nickelsen. One department, Internal Reporting, issued a challenge to managers to match all staff donations and raised almost thirteen hundred dollars, with which they bought a ton of school supplies. And, Technology Services collected 40 backpacks and 7 boxes of other supplies. Members of the Employee Engagement Committee then sorted, packed, and delivered the donations to the Wilder Foundation for distribution.

“We have some really generous people in St. Paul. We’re all looking forward to doing it again next year and exceeding this year’s donations.”
